Google Summer of Code 2008

Here we go again! hugin/panotools has been accepted as a mentoring organization for the Google Summer of Code 2008.

If you’re a full time student and would like to apply for a paid summer internship with Google, mentored by our team on a project in this exciting area of image processing, read below. Application deadline: March 31 5:00 PM PDT. Some tips on how to get accepted below.

If you are at a university and have access to students, make them aware of this fantastic opportunity for a paid summer internship. Forward them a link to this page. Our last year leaflet needs an update: the timeline that has slightly changed.

And if you are a community member with coding skills and some time (5-10 hours a week over three months) to spare and mentor a student, we’d like to hear from you too.

Student? Here’s how to improve your chances to get accepted

  1. Familiarize with the community. Join the hugin-ptx mailing list, introduce yourself. Don’t wait with this very important step.
  2. Familiarize with the codebase. Get hugin, enblend, panotools, freepv. Build them on your computer. Instructions here.
  3. Check out the bug tracker. Investigate an issue, post a report, post a patch. This year we’ll make contributing a patch a mandatory condition when screening applications. The most updated bug tracker is hugin’s.
  4. Think of what you’d like to code. Some starting points / ideas are on the panotools wiki. You can either develop further one of the ideas mentioned there, or come up with your own.

Looking forward for another beautiful summer!

Update: proposal will be kept here. Get a wiki account and add yours!

  3. @Rahul Agarwal: Although the question is off-topic for this blog, I guess many people who stumble in the Google Summer of Code initiative may have the same wish as you. I will try to help your legitimate aspiration.

Bad news first: while it is a Google initiative the Summer of Code is not an internship with Google. I was surprised to find out how little recruiting Google does amongst these students.

The good news: Google is reaching out to students like you in many ways. It holds regular recruiting events in many universities throughout the world. Check with your local Google office. And it has a page with information and job offers.

  4. If you’re a student looking for an opportunity, most of what has been written for 2008 is still valid in 2009. Join the community, learn how to build the code on your machine, play with it, and […]

  5. This advice is still valid for 2009.
