Gentoo Linux is a “special flavor of Linux that can be automatically optimized and customized for just about any application or need. Extreme performance, configurability and a top-notch user and developer community are all hallmarks of the Gentoo experience”. At the core of Gentoo is Portage, a software distribution system. Unlike most Linux distributions, Portage does not distribute binaries. Instead, like the FreeBSD ports collection, it distributes scripts that automatically get the appropriate source code and build it, customized for the user’s specific needs.
Thomas Pani has updated both the release and snapshots available to Gentoo users via Portage. Gentoo is the first Linux distribution known to me that gives all of its users access to Hugin-0.8.0. That’s the equivalent to a binary distribution on other platforms. If you want to stay on top with Hugin and related tools, Gentoo is an excellent choice.
