Hugin ships with Nodal Ninja

It’s official. A testimonial to the maturity of hugin, starting next week it will ship on the CD that comes bundled with each Nodal Ninja. Windows-only for the first batch.

hugin Nodal Ninja Special Edition closely mirrors the current installer. The main difference is that it has no automatic control point (CP) detection because all CP detectors currently available for hugin are tainted by patents in some jurisdictions, particularly in the United States where the CD is produced and shipped.

Hugin without Autopano-SIFT-C is perfectly useable. I’ll publish a tutorial soon.

With hugin Nodal Ninja customers will get more value from their pano heads.

  1. because all CP detectors currently available for hugin are tainted by patents in some jurisdictions

My impression was that Zoran’s work had been done intentionally to get away from that situation.

  2. Indeed, Zoran’s work was the first part. A complete CP detectors is made of a feature detector and a feature matcher.

In Google Summer of Code 2007 Zoran wrote a feature detector. It goes over a picture and finds features. It works well – so far combined with the feature matcher that is part of autopano-SIFT and thus patent-tainted.

In Google Summer of Code 2008 Onur is writing a feature matcher. It takes the deteted features of two images and matches them.

Feature matcher + feature detector = CP detector. Coming soon, thanks to Google’s sponsorship.
